YouTube.com looks great

I have always been a bit annoyed by the lackluster care for #design on #YouTube.com. It has always seemed as though they were so focused about #functionality that the #aesthetics were irrelevant. On December 1st, 2011 at 4:30 p.m. EST, YouTube.com released its #redesign to everyone! The focus is now on channels and seems to be a move on cable #TV.

What do you think about the redesign of YouTube? Do you think aligning more with #Google is a good thing? I have not had a paid TV service (cable, dish, satellite, etc.) in almost 3 years, and I have to admit I am looking forward to this. Is this a play for even more of the TV market?

To be honest I think it's… so-so – at least the home/welcome screen. It's too "busy" and everything is packed too closely together. The result of this is that when I'm trying to read the description of a video I find my eyes wandering to the dozens of other videos and links that are all squished together next to the thumbnail that I'm trying to focus on. It's really distracting. The main page is 5 screens long, but it wastes a good 1/3 of the screen on side margins. They could have used that real estate to space the contents out properly. Once you start watching videos it seems to use the same layout as before, but the theme does look a little better than before.

I would have appreciated some responsive design as well 🙂 Good point Bart on the waste of screen, as once I switched to my iMac tonight I noticed the lack of #responsive design. However, it looks fine on my other (lower res.) devices / PC / Laptop.
